THE LEIGH TONGUE AND SIMON PRICE MEMORIAL 5-A-SIDE FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

 

1.       INTRODUCTION.    This is an annual tournament held in memory of Leigh Tongue and Simon Price.  As a Physical Trainer in the RN, Leigh Tongue was a very talented sportsman.  He played football at the highest level and was subsequently selected and played for combined services as well as the Royal Navy.  He was also a respected Portsmouth Field Gunner and US rugby player.  After leaving the service he worked for P&O, where he was an integral part of their organisation.  Simon Price was a well known character in the Royal Navy who was well respected by everyone who knew him.  Simon was also a Portsmouth Field Gunner who was renowned for his love of life and for the many practical jokes he played.  He was an avid Pompey FC supporter and was instrumental in the founding of the Field Gunners Association. 

 

2.       DATE, TIME AND VENUE.     It is intended to hold the above event on the Astro-Turf at HMS Excellent on Sat 26 Jul 08 commencing at 1200 as part of the Portsmouth Field Gun Re-union Day.

 

3.       AIM.     The aim of the tournament is to raise money for the Rowans Hospice charity via a raffle and entry fees for the 5-a-side competition.

 

4.       COMPETITION.      The format of the competition will depend on the number of entries received.

 

5.       ENTRIES FEES.     Entries are invited from PTI’s serving / non serving, Ex Field Gunners, Ex Pompey RN footballers, P&O Employees and all those who wish to help raise as much as we can for the dedicated charity.  The attached entry pro-forma (Annex A) is to be returned by Mon 21 Jul 08 with a cheque to the value of £5 per player made payable to “PFGA”.  

 

6.       MANAGER’S BRIEFING.     There will be a brief of all the rules / timings at 1200 on the Astro-Turf. All team managers are to attend.

 

7.       CHANGING FACILITIES.     The pavilion, situated on the south/west corner of the upper lawn, will be used for all team changing.

 

8.       PRESENTATION OF PRIZES AND RAFFLE.     There will be a presentation of prizes to the winners of the competition.  More importantly, there will be a charity raffle, drinks, Bar-B-Q and children’s entertainment throughout the afternoon. Donations for the raffle prizes are welcome.

 

9.       B-B-Q.     It is requested that those individuals wishing to eat, complete the required information at Annex B and forward a cheque to the value of £5 per person made payable to “PFGA - BBQ” by 21 Jul 08.  This information will assist greatly for the catering preparations.

 

10.     CHILDREN.     Children of the age of 7 and above are most welcome to participate if there is enough interest a children’s football match will be held.  See Annex C.      

 

11.     ADDITIONAL ENTERTAINMENT.          There will be a range of other activities available for children of all ages such as bouncy castles, face painting and a children’s entertainer.
