In 1907 the toughest team sport known to man was introduced to the world at the Military Tournament of Arms in the Olympia Arena.  In 1999 in the Earls Court Arena at the annual Royal Military Tournament the Royal Navy Inter Command Field Gun Competition ran its last course.  On that occasion we celebrated the 100th anniversary of the heroic efforts of the Royal Navy Blue Jackets at the relief of Ladysmith during the Boer War in South Africa, from where this unique event gained its origins.

To commemorate the very first running of the Inter Command Field Gun Competition it is proposed to hold a commemorative centenary dinner (Command 100) in the magnificent surroundings of the Painted Hall at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, London, on Saturday 28 July 2007.

To host this event in these luxurious and historical surroundings is not cheap, but I consider the importance of the occasion justifies the surroundings and the expense.  This sense of occasion has not been lost on the Royal Navy.  The Second Sea Lord allocated the Command Field Gunners one of the 6 annual Royal Naval events to be granted free use of the Pained Hall.  This generous gesture has resulted in a £9,000 saving on the hire fee alone. However, there are still other considerable costs that need to be covered and I will highlight these in my regular updates on the Devonport Field Gun Association web site at www.devonport.info

To celebrate this historical occasion the intention is to host 500 ex Field Gunners, FGO’s, Field Gun and Battery Staff personnel (wives and partners tbc dependent upon the uptake from primary target audience) and a small number (18) of sponsors and personality type VIPs.  The general plan for the evening will be:

Rig: Field Gun Blazer or Lounge Suite;

1900-2000hrs pre and post dinner drinks in the very beautiful Queen Mary Ante Room or Greenwich Grounds (weather dependent);

a photographic opportunity with 12lb Gun and Limber and the Inter Command Cups;

2000hrs a 3/4 course dinner and wine with the accompanying sound of Royal Tournament incidental music played by a military orchestra (RM tbc) concluding with after dinner speech(s).

On completion of the dinner the bar in the Queen Mary Ante Room will remain open until 0100hrs.

I am also investigating the production of a Centenary Medal as an individual historical memento that will be included in the price of the ticket.  However, the most important factor is the chance to relive some fantastic memories with like-minded people.

With a full complement of 518 diners I estimate the cost (without sponsorship) to be £120 per head. I have set the personal contribution at £75 per person.  It is imperative that by the 1 Nov 06 I am in a position to confirm both individual and sponsorship support to enable this magnificent event to go ahead.  Individuals are requested to return the attached proforma with a deposit cheque to the value of  £25 made payable to: Command 100 by this date.

The search is now on for sponsorship and the organising of fund raising activities to meet the significant shortfall in funds to host an event on this scale.  If you are in a position to make an active contribution to the cause please contact me.  I would also ask that we all spread the word and distribute copies of this memorandum to those who you know would be interested.

I hope that this centennial anniversary of `Command Field Gunning’ will appeal to everyone who was involved in the `Toughest Team Event in the Word’ (1907-1999). This is not a money making exercise on my behalf (any under-spend will be returned to individuals).  This is a very special occasion for some very special people who participated in a very special event that deserves special recognition. The key to its success is teamwork, support and sponsorship (were have I heard that before!)  I look forward to hearing from you.
